I am starting a podcast series in partnership with the Stanford Social Innovation Review (http://www.ssireview.org/) with support from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. The focus of the series is to think beyond conventional international development work... for inspiration so that challenges can be better addressed by looking beyond the limitations of our particular development sector. Through this Podcast Series Project, we will, for instance, look at how social movements are formed and...moreless

By Patrick Moriarty, IRC Water and Sanitation Centre and John Sauer, Water For People What is it that IADB’s Max Valasquez Matute in Honduras finds... ‘only a bit short of a miracle’? The decision by seven INGOs to align their programming in Honduras in support of an Everyone Forever movement aimed at delivering full coverage in sustainable rural water, sanitation and hygiene services. Whether there was divine intervention or not, the meeting we attended on the 24 May between the assembled...moreless

Transparency in philanthropy and aid matters immensely. Aid effectiveness can be radically enhanced by being more open about results – good and... bad – through the creative use of data and non-promotional storytelling. Organizations can improve and innovate if they value data and use it to change the way they operate and implement, as I have argued elsewhere. And I believe that the more open the data the better the response will be as long as the data is understandable, outcome...moreless

Hi Ned-I want to agree with you on this, and I doubt that anyone really enjoys seeing/reading meaningless data, but I need maybe an example or two of... where we find "the puke" today...although I'm not trying to start any e-fights with other well-meaning orgs (or AM I?). I recall back in college, listening to presentations by Phd students who basically had to talk for 90 minutes about their failed dissertation models/theories. I remember feeling just awful for them having to do this,...moreless

its pretty ironic - i have found from my experience that governments prefers seeing data puke. for some reason there is a distinct belief that the... more data you mention/share the more reliable that report must be...well again i have found that people dont remember the stats and that report is shelved somewhere never to be used again. @Jesse: we have tried to share our failure and here is an example http://www.admittingfailure.com/failure/muthi-nhlema/ - we were imspired by engineers without... moreless

I am so glad this theme is being discussed, such an important topic. To avoid the pit-falls of "data puke", it is worth reflecting on how... impact is measured and communicated. Two organizations who have been quite successful in this regard are: Against Malaria Foundation http://www.againstmalaria.com/ Schistosomiasis Control Initiative http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/schisto Both are recommended charities by GiveWell and Give What We Can, who have spent a considerable time examining... moreless
